EU moves money from Horizon 2020 to economic fund

JUN 01, 2015
Physics Today

Science : Horizon 2020, the European Union’s innovation and research program, is losing €2.2 billion ($2.4 billion) of its €74 billion budget between now and 2020. The European Commission made the decision last week to move the money into an investment program that provides funds for entrepreneurs. The money will be pulled from a range of Horizon 2020 programs; however, three are explicitly excluded from losing funds. The first is the European Research Council, which funds individual grants for basic research and is widely popular with scientists in the EU. The other two programs are the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions, a fund for PhD and postdoc fellowships, and the Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation program, which aims to help underperforming EU nation research efforts.
