Entrepreneur collaborates with scientists to search for alien life

JUL 20, 2015
Physics Today

BBC : A large-scale scientific search for signs of intelligent life in the universe is being launched by a private organization, Breakthrough Initiatives, founded by Russian entrepreneur Yuri Milner, who has a degree in theoretical physics. The group claims the $100 million effort will be the largest such venture to date. It will make use of two of the world’s most powerful telescopes—the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia and the Parkes Telescope in New South Wales, Australia—to scan 10 times more of the sky than previous projects and 5 times more of the radio spectrum. Among those involved with the initiative are renowned physicist Stephen Hawking and UK Astronomer Royal Martin Rees. “The search for extra-terrestrial life is the most exciting quest in 21st-century science,” said Rees.
