Google’s doodle celebrates the life and work of Emmy Noether, who was born on this day in 1882 in Erlangen, Germany. In 1915 she proved one of the most remarkable results in theoretical physics: That symmetries of nature correspond to conservation laws. For example, translational symmetry (the laws of nature remain the same when you change position) correspond to the conservation of momentum. When Noether died in 1935, Albert Einstein said of her: “In the judgment of the most competent living mathematicians, Fraulein Noether was the most significant mathematical genius thus far produced since the higher education of women began.”
