Earth’s temperature to reach 1 °C above preindustrial levels for first time this year

NOV 10, 2015
Physics Today

Ars Technica : The UK’s Met Office estimates that, based on temperatures from January through September, the global mean surface temperature this year will be 1.02 °C higher than in the preindustrial era. The Met Office Hadley Centre for Climate Science and Services, which collaborated with the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit for the estimate, defines the preindustrial era as the period from 1850 to 1900. Stephen Belcher, the director of the Hadley Centre, says that although El Niño is a contributing factor to this year’s peak, human influence is still the primary driving factor for increased temperatures. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which uses the mean temperature between 1900 and 2000 as its comparison point, says that 2015 is currently 0.85 °C above that average.
