Earth faces almost certain disaster thanks to humans, says Hawking

Telegraph : According to Stephen Hawking, disaster could strike Earth within the next 1000–10 000 years, and the biggest threats are manmade. Among them are nuclear war, global warming, and genetically engineered viruses. However, by the time such a disaster happens, humankind will probably have gone on to colonize other planets. Although most of the danger arises from advances in science and technology, he says that rather than quell innovation, humans must learn to “recognize the dangers and control them.” Hawking, who developed motor neurone disease at an early age, credits technological advances with helping him to deal with the debilitating disease and to continue leading a productive life.
