DOE delays restart of waste isolation plant

AUG 06, 2015
Physics Today

Albuquerque Journal : The US Department of Energy has announced that the date to reopen the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico, has been pushed back. Closed since February 2014 due to a radiation leak, WIPP had been scheduled to reopen in March 2016. However, additional issues have come up that must be addressed, including recommendations from the accident investigation boards, implementation of more rigorous site-specific safety analyses, and problems concerning the manufacture and delivery of the interim ventilation system. DOE is hosting a town hall meeting in Carlsbad later today to discuss the WIPP recovery activities.
