Design competition opens for Hyperloop transport system

JUN 16, 2015
Physics Today

Telegraph : Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX and cofounder of PayPal and Tesla Motors, is hosting a student design competition to push forward his latest concept, the Hyperloop high-speed transportation system. The Hyperloop would consist of pressurized pods that shoot along a cushion of air inside reduced-pressure tubes. According to Musk, such a system would be superior to other forms of public transport because it would be more energy efficient, significantly quicker and less expensive, impervious to weather, and safe from crashes. Rather than develop a commercial Hyperloop himself, however, Musk has launched a competition for people to design the transportation pods. SpaceX will build a one-mile track near its headquarters in California to test the pod designs.
