Physics Today

It’s the birthday of Claude-Louis Navier, who was born in 1785 in Dijon, France. Navier trained as a civil engineer and led the construction of several notable bridges, including the one over the River Seine at Argenteuil (shown here in a painting by Claude Monet). Navier rose to become France’s inspector general of roads and bridges, but he is most famous (at least to physicists) for formulating the equations of fluid motion, the Navier-Stokes, equations.

Date in History: 10 February 1785
