Canada’s new minister of science faces uncertain role

DEC 22, 2015
Physics Today

Nature : When Canada’s new prime minister Justin Trudeau took office, one of his first actions was creating the minister of science position and appointing medical geographer and member of Parliament Kirsty Duncan to the position. It still isn’t clear what Duncan’s job will entail. Several major science policy announcements have been made, but by ministers other than Duncan. It appears that Duncan will be focused on the country’s own scientific efforts, including its environmental assessment process and basic research. But until the first budget of the new government is put forward, what she will actually be able to do in those areas is unclear.
