Bionic eye restores limited sight to the blind

Ars Technica : A bionic eye implant has been developed that will allow people with certain types of vision loss to regain some degree of sight. The Argus II was designed for people with late-stage retinitis pigmentosa . It consists of a digital camera mounted on a pair of glasses, a computer chip implanted in the eyeball, and a tiny electrode array implanted behind the retina. Images captured by the camera are wirelessly transmitted to the chip, which activates the array and stimulates the retinal cells. Although the device cannot produce anywhere near the same level of detail as a fully functioning human eye, it could allow those who have completely lost their sight to make out the location of an object and determine whether it is moving.
