Balloon network to provide internet access to Indonesia

MIT Technology Review : Despite the ready availability of internet access in the developed world, as much as two-thirds of the world’s population remains unconnected, according to Project Loon . Launched by Google in 2013, the project aims to use a network of balloons floating in the stratosphere to allow people in rural and remote areas to connect to the global internet. The balloons relay communications from cell phones and other devices through the use of high-speed LTE wireless technology. In 2016 Project Loon plans to conduct its largest test yet—providing internet service to Indonesia, an archipelago that comprises thousands of islands and is home to about 250 million people.
