Australian prime minister’s emissions targets internationally condemned

AUG 13, 2015
Physics Today

Science : Instead of setting Australia’s emissions reduction target at 40–60% by 2030, as recommended by the Climate Change Authority, Prime Minister Tony Abbott set it at 26–28%. In response, foreign governments and climate agencies have attacked Abbott’s plan as being well below the standards that are necessary to keep global warming below 2 °C. Australia currently has the highest per capita greenhouse gas emissions of industrialized nations, and the proposed cuts are some of the weakest among the major nations attending the United Nations climate negotiations in Paris in December.
