arXiv adds category for applied physics

The popular online repository for math and physics preprints, arXiv.org, now includes a new subject area: applied physics. The addition , announced on 20 April, is a rare change for the famously consistent site. Administrators at arXiv describe the new subcategory (coded app-ph under the “Physics” category) as “applications of physics to new technology, including: electronic devices; optics; photonics; microwaves; spintronics; advanced materials; metamaterials; nanotechnology; and energy sciences.”
The site’s 14-member scientific advisory board approved the new designation in response to an uptick in submissions that were “too much on the applied side to fit into related arXiv areas such as optics and material[s] science,” according to an email from arXiv operations manager Jim Entwood.
Researchers can submit papers immediately for review by a dedicated applied physics moderator. Twenty-three entries appeared in the first crop that was posted on 24 April.
