Science and the H‐bomb

Although the array of closely related facts having to do with thermonuclear bombs, atomic espionage, the Russian bomb, and so on has been impressive, there has been little evidence of widespread agreement as to what the facts may imply. Apart from the free‐for‐all debate concerning the morality of H‐bomb construction and use (a debate that usually ended with the conclusions that if possible it must be made and that war is evil), perhaps the most pressing question for scientists generally is of the extent to which science’s relations with society might be altered by recent events.
