THE American Astronomical Society, which was established more than sixty years ago, joined the American Institute of Physics as an Associate Member Society on October 29, 1959, thus becoming the second national scientific organization to be accorded that status in the Institute since the associate membership category was created last year. As announced some months ago, the American Crystallographic Association was named an AIP Associate Member Society on May 6, 1959, under a provision in the Institute’s revised by‐laws which states that societies having a primary interest in fields of science closely related to physics or the applications of physics may be nominated for associate membership by the AIP Governing Board and elected by vote of the Institute’s five Member Societies.
