Batavia accelerator—startup a year early?

There is a good chance the world’s largest accelerator will begin operating a year ahead of schedule and at an energy of 500 GeV instead of 200 GeV.

R. R. WILSON, director of the National Accelerator Laboratory, has surprised the physics world once again by announcing a significant advance in the date for the first beam in the Batavia accelerator. He further announced that protons might reach an energy of 500 GeV, instead of 200 GeV, soon after startup.
