Born 16 February 1937 in Simferopol in what is now Ukraine, Yuri Manin is a mathematician whose work has frequently crossed into the realm of physics. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Moscow State University and a doctorate from the Steklov Mathematics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. His research has delved into algebraic geometry, number theory, differential equations, and more. The loosening of travel restrictions by the Soviet Union in the 1980s allowed Manin to collaborate with physicists in Europe and the US. In 1980 he wrote Computable and uncomputable, a paper on quantum information that is considered one of the foundations for the field of quantum computing.
