Talking Points Memo: The US may soon build its first freshwater wind farm—in the waters of Lake Erie, off the shore of Cleveland, Ohio. The Lake Erie Energy Development Corp is proposing to install some 5–9 wind turbines that will each produce 3 MW of power. Lake Erie, which boasts strong and more consistent winds than anywhere onshore in the state, is the shallowest of the Great Lakes, which makes it easier and cheaper to install turbines. The company is vying for grant money from the US Department of Energy to fund the project. Once up and running, the turbines would generate enough power to service approximately 8900 homes.
