Vostok 3 launched

On this day in 1962 the Soviet Union’s Vostok 3 mission launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome. On board was cosmonaut Andriyan Nikolayev. Once his spacecraft had entered Earth orbit, Nikolayev released his harness and became the first human to float in microgravity. The following year, he married Valentina Tereshkova, who as the first woman to fly in space.
