Volcanic island merges with its neighbor

APR 09, 2014
Physics Today

BBC : In November 2013 a volcano created a new island approximately 1000 km south of Tokyo. Named Niijima, it was just 500 m from the shore of an older volcanic island, Nishino-shima, which hadn’t been active since the 1970s. Continuing eruptions have now fully joined the two islands, with Niijima contributing the larger land area. The merged island has two cones that rise 60 m above sea level, and lava flows continue to increase its size.
