Variety of military satellite systems vulnerable to attack

Guardian : Security consulting agency IOActive claims to have found a range of vulnerabilities in multiple satellite systems. The vulnerable systems are produced by Cobham, Inmarsat, Harris Corp, Hughes, Iridium, Thuraya, and Japan Radio Company. Ruben Santamarta, the researcher who found the vulnerabilities, said that the companies were informed late last year but that only Iridium has indicated that it is working on fixes. One of the primary systems that is vulnerable is the Broadband Global Area Network receiver, which is used by military units for voice and data communications. The devices could be infected with location tracking software or be remotely disabled. Other systems are used in shipping and aircraft monitoring and communications.
