US institute for 3D printing opens its doors

AUG 21, 2012
Physics Today
Science : The National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII) in Youngstown, Ohio, is the first of several regional institutes that President Obama hopes will guide the future of manufacturing in the US. Additive manufacturing, more commonly known as 3D printing, creates objects by building layers of material. The process can save up to 90% on material costs over traditional machining, in which excess material is removed to produce the desired product. Funded jointly by the Department of Defense and a consortium of businesses, community colleges, and universities, NAMII will focus on addressing problems facing the industry, expanding research and development, and increasing the number of training programs.
