US discourages building of new coal plants worldwide

OCT 31, 2013
Physics Today

New York Times : The US announced this week that it will no longer provide funding for the building of new coal-fired power plants in other countries and will urge other public and private investors to follow suit. The decision reinforces the Obama administration’s commitment to clean energy, as spelled out in the president’s Climate Action Plan announced last summer. An exception may be made, however, for the world’s poorest countries if no other option is available. But both at home and abroad, any new coal-fired plant would have to meet strict emissions standards that involve carbon capture and sequestration. It is not clear how much impact the decision will have, but it is hoped that as more countries institute similar policies, there will be a push for energy technologies that are better for the environment.
