US budget deal ends funding for light-bulb efficiency enforcement

Ars Technica : The US Congress announced yesterday that it had reached an agreement on a budget for the next fiscal year. One part of the deal includes the elimination of funding for enforcement of light-bulb efficiency standards. Originally put in place in 2007, the standards aim to encourage a shift from incandescent bulbs to more energy-efficient, longer lasting LED and compact fluorescent bulbs. But because energy-efficient bulbs cost more up front, their adoption has been slow. The removal of funding leaves the standards intact, but the inability to enforce them will prolong the use of light bulbs that waste energy.
