UK works to promote growth of its nuclear industry

MAR 27, 2013
Physics Today
Science : The UK is developing a strategy to increase funding for and development of nuclear power. The decision was made in response to a 2011 report from the House of Lords regarding the UK’s nuclear R&D capabilities. Because the country has not built a new nuclear plant since the 1980s, funding for nuclear R&D is lower there than in many other countries. The authors of the new strategy looked at the current state of nuclear R&D and developed a roadmap outlining what needs to be done. Among the recommendations is a £15 million ($23 million) national nuclear users’ facility, collaborations with other countries, and new alternative reactor designs.
