UK to allow Chinese investment in nuclear project

OCT 18, 2013
Physics Today

Wall Street Journal : For the first time, the UK has invited two Chinese companies—China National Nuclear Corp and China General Nuclear Power Group—to invest in a new nuclear power project to be built on UK soil. The announcement, which marks one of the rare instances that a developed country has allowed a Chinese company to invest in its critical infrastructure, highlights the economic plight of the UK when it comes to financing such large-scale projects. Having already received $17.8 billion from China since 2005 for other projects, the UK has received more Chinese investment money than any other country in Europe. Although the Chinese will serve primarily as investors, over time they may be able to move from a minority stake to a majority stake in future projects, according to UK Treasury chief George Osborne.
