Two electronics giants create curved-screen phones

NOV 05, 2013
Physics Today

Wall Street Journal : Both Samsung and LG Electronics have released their own versions of a curved smartphone. The new devices feature plastic organic LED screens, which are thinner and more flexible than conventional liquid-crystal displays. Although the new curved design is more interesting than practical, it is one step along the way to achieving a completely bendable device. Some design problems remain, however, including the susceptibility of plastic OLEDs to moisture and to getting scratched and the difficulty of making all the components, including the battery and microprocessors, flexible. Nevertheless, someday we may all be able to wrap our phones around our wrists, or fold them up and put them in a pocket.
