Tsar Bomba detonated

On this day in 1961 the Soviet Union detonated its AN602 hydrogen bomb on the Arctic island of Novaya Zemlya. Nicknamed Tsar Bomba (the king of bombs), the device yielded the most powerful manmade explosion in human history: 50 megatons TNT equivalent or 210 petajoules. Only one AN602 was officially built.
