Suzette Kimball nominated to head US Geological Survey

JAN 10, 2014
Physics Today

Science : President Obama has nominated Suzette Kimball to become the next director of the US Geological Survey (USGS). Kimball has been the agency’s acting director since February 2013, when previous director Marcia McNutt resigned to become the editor-in-chief of Science. Kimball, who has been at USGS for 15 years, holds a PhD in environmental sciences from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Kimball’s nomination may face resistance from Republicans in the Senate, however. Over the past several years, the USGS has been faced with stagnant funding. After McNutt resigned last year, Republican senators had asked Obama to nominate an economic geologist who would focus the USGS on surveying for mineral resources with high economic value.
