Stuart Parkin wins 2014 Millennium Technology Prize

The Guardian : The €1 million ($1.4 million) Millennium Technology Prize is awarded by Technology Academy Finland every two years to recognize developments that have significantly improved everyday life. The 2014 prize has been awarded to Stuart Parkin, an IBM Fellow, for using giant magnetoresistance and spintronics to develop extremely sensitive magnetic field detectors called spin valves in 1989. Used in magnetic hard drives, they increased data storage capacity 1000-fold without significantly increasing cost.
