Spectroscopy Awards

On March 7, during the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, the 1963 Award of the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh was presented to William F. Meggers. Dr. Meggers, who headed the Spectroscopy Section of the National Bureau of Standards from 1920 until his retirement in 1958, was cited by the Society for his “remarkable contributions to the field of emission spectroscopy”. His work in the past four decades has been concerned chiefly with standard wavelengths in optical spectra, descriptions of atomic and molecular spectra, spectroscopic light sources, the Zeeman effect, analysis of spectral data for the derivation of atomic energy levels, atomic structure, and properties of atomic nuclei.
