Solar prominences tied to atmospheric patterns

APR 25, 2014
Physics Today

New Scientist : Pictures of the Sun’s corona have shown unusual patterns that look like smoke rings or bubbles. Miloslav Druckmüller of the Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic and his colleagues created a composite image of 60 photographs taken during a solar eclipse when the Sun’s corona is visible as a white halo. This produced an image that revealed the atmospheric patterns and solar prominences—the large, bright, gaseous features that extend outward from the Sun’s surface—and allowed Druckmüller’s team to find connections between the two.
