Smartphones may one day offer gesture recognition

SEP 26, 2014
Physics Today

MIT Technology Review : The next generation of smartphones may go beyond touch screens and simply require a wave of the hand to answer the phone, navigate maps, or scroll through a file. The new user interface, called SideSwipe , is being developed by a group of researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle. SideSwipe uses an algorithm to interpret disturbances in a smartphone’s wireless GSM signal caused by hand gestures near the device. Although the group used the prototype only while the phone was in the process of making a call, since that ensured a GSM signal, the researchers say an app could be developed to directly access a device’s GSM module. For the moment, they are refining their antenna design and exploring options with other wireless technologies.
