MAR 26, 2014
Physics Today

New York Times : The German engineering firm Siemens is partnering with Associated British Ports to build production and installation facilities for offshore wind turbines along the east coast of the UK. A plant for the production of turbine rotor blades is planned to open in Paull, England, in 2016. In nearby Green Port Hull, Associated British Ports will open the first port in the UK specialized in the transport of the blades, which can be up to 80 m long. Siemens will invest about £160 million ($264 million), while Associated British Ports, which is funded by a group of investors including Goldman Sachs, will invest £150 million. British wind generation increased by 38% last year and accounts for 6% of the nation’s electricity. Plans currently in place target a tripling of wind generation to 14 GW by 2020.
