Sequester still affecting science budgets

NPR : The across-the-board spending cuts that went into effect earlier this year are continuing to have an impact on a number of research institutions. Oak Ridge National Laboratory is home to the world’s second fastest supercomputer, Titan, but the cost of the electricity necessary to operate it and the rest of the lab’s facilities is considerable. As a result, funds that would have been dedicated to developing a new supercomputer have been diverted to maintain current operations. While Titan is still being used for research, grants from other government agencies to fund individual researchers to access the computer are also being reduced, which may cause young scientists to look for jobs elsewhere.
