Physics Today

It’s the birthday of Robert Goddard, who was born in 1882 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Goddard studied physics at Worcester Polytechnic and at Clark University. His fascination with flight led him in 1909 to propose boosting the efficiency of rockets by using liquid propellant in place of solids. Sixteen years later Goddard successfully launched the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket. The use of liquid fuel was one of several of Goddard’s innovations in rocketry. He also developed rockets that had gyroscopes, steerable thrust and multiple stages.
