Rising emissions in China increase smog in US

JAN 27, 2014
Physics Today

Los Angeles Times : As China increases its production of such export products as cellphones, TVs, and appliances, it is also releasing more pollutants into the atmosphere. And that pollution is spreading globally, including to the US West Coast, according to a recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In 2006 Los Angeles suffered at least one extra day of smog due to emissions from China. However, the study writers point out, most US air pollution continues to come from this country’s own emissions from vehicles, factories, and power plants. The scientists who wrote the report hope that their findings will show that air pollution is a worldwide problem and will help world governments set policies regarding carbon dioxide emissions and other air pollutants.
