On this day in 1975 cosmonauts Georgi Grechko (right) and Aleksei Gubarev (left) returned safely to Earth having spent a record 29 days in space aboard the Soviet Union’s Salyut 4 station. Their Soyuz capsule landed 110 km NE of Tselinograd during a snow storm. Flight engineer Gubarev has a PhD in mathematics. In 1992 he resigned from the Russian space program to teach atmospheric physics.
