Underground quartz deposits are abundant wherever fault lines occur and indicate a weakness in Earth’s crust that is likely to lead to a geological event. Marta Pérez-Gussinyé from the University of London and geophysicist Anthony Lowry from Utah State University published their findings in Nature on 16 March.
The finding that the Saturnian moon may host layers of icy slush instead of a global ocean could change how planetary scientists think about other icy moons as well.
