Preprint repository arXiv achieves milestone million uploads

Nature : As of 29 December 2014, the arXiv eprint server holds more than 1 million research papers. Launched in 1991, the same year as the World Wide Web, arXiv was designed by Paul Ginsparg of Cornell University to provide a forum where researchers could share their papers with colleagues more quickly than could be achieved through conventional peer-reviewed scientific journals. Since its inception 23 years ago, arXiv has proven to be highly successful in attracting important research while also being relatively inexpensive to maintain. And because it is now receiving some 250 submissions daily, arXiv’s ever-growing database is also being mined by researchers in other fields to study such topics as scientific trends and plagiarism .
