Potential space shuttle replacement crash-lands during test flight

OCT 31, 2013
Physics Today

New Scientist : Several companies are building potential craft to replace the space shuttle and service the International Space Station. One of the contenders, Sierra Nevada Corp’s Dream Chaser , suffered a rough landing Saturday during an otherwise successful pilotless test flight. After being carried to an altitude of 3.8 km by a helicopter, the autonomous craft was set free to glide down to a landing strip. But its left landing gear did not deploy, causing the craft to skid off the runway. The plane did not flip over, however, and suffered only minimal damage.
