THE New England Section of the Optical Society has made the first presentation of its recently established New England Optical Scholarship to Robert Merrithew, a 1959 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, who is currently a graduate physics student at Ohio State University. The $500 award is given for academic excellence and a demonstrated interest in optics, and undergraduates as well as graduate students are eligible to receive it. The scholarship program was established as part of a continuing program to attract students to the field of optics. It was stimulated by a donation from a member of the Society and it has been announced that contributions from New England optical industries will establish a fund for future scholarship awards.
