Offshore iron mine proposal rejected by New Zealand

New York Times : New Zealand’s Environmental Protection Authority rejected a plan to mine iron ore from offshore deposits. The proposal had been made by Trans-Tasman Resources, a company formed to mine the country’s iron sand deposits. The agency said its rejection was based on the uncertainty regarding the potential environmental damage from the project. A coalition of environmental groups, fishing companies, and native Maori organizations had opposed the proposal. The decision will probably influence similar proposals in other countries and another proposal in New Zealand to mine offshore phosphate deposits for fertilizers.
