North Korea to reopen nuclear plant

APR 02, 2013
Physics Today
BBC : North Korea has announced that it is going to restart all facilities at its Yongbyon nuclear complex. The decision comes in the wake of a series of nuclear tests and threats against South Korea and the US. Closed in July 2007 as part of a disarmament deal, the Yongbyon reactor had provided plutonium for North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. Although it is being restarted ostensibly to generate more electricity, it could also be used to enrich uranium to weapons-grade levels. The US has been monitoring the situation and, according to White House spokesman Jay Carney, has seen no “changes to the North Korean military posture, such as large-scale mobilizations and positioning of forces.” Nevertheless, the US has sent a warship to the South Korean coast and will be placing a radar platform in the western Pacific.
