North Korea agrees to suspend nuclear testing

MAR 01, 2012
Physics Today
Nature : North Korea will suspend uranium enrichment, long-range ballistic-missile development, and nuclear testing in exchange for 240 000 tons of food aid from the US. North Korea will also allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to enter the Yongbyon nuclear complex; the IAEA is especially interested in the uranium-enrichment program there. This is the first major international agreement made by Kim Jong-un, who in December succeeded Kim Jong-il as the country’s supreme leader. Both the US and North Korea seem hopeful, but there’s no timeline for the resumption of inspections or the suspension of nuclear testing, and the success of the agreement remains to be determined.
