Nobel laureates ask that jailed Iranian physicist be freed

SEP 29, 2014
Physics Today

Nature : In a letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, 18 Nobel Prize–winning physicists call for the release of Omid Kokabee, who was imprisoned in Teheran in 2011. Kokabee had been working on his physics PhD at the University of Texas at Austin when he was arrested while visiting with family in Iran. He is currently serving 10 years on charges of “communicating with a hostile government.” The letter, however, alleges he was imprisoned “due to his refusal to engage in military research for the Islamic Republic of Iran.” While in jail Kokabee has been allowed to submit papers to optics conferences and the physics preprint archive.
