NOAA opens new weather and climate center

OCT 16, 2012
Physics Today
Science : The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration opened its newest center of operations on 15 October. The Center for Weather and Climate Prediction, located in College Park, Maryland, will be the US government’s primary source for tracking hurricanes and forecasting ocean currents. The center will host more than 800 scientists, forecasters, data analysts, and researchers, and it will partner with the nearby University of Maryland to offer students research and career opportunities. The facility has been in the works for 13 years and is replacing an older facility nearby. The state-of-the-art center will be connected to the US military and to the Weather Channel to provide as close to real-time weather updates as possible.
