New model and a phone app may help overcome jet lag

Los Angeles Times : All you might need to know to minimize jet lag is your current location, destination, and the kind of light you’ll have access to. A new iPhone app uses that information to produce the schedule of light exposure you need to follow to reset your body clock after you arrive. If you stay on schedule, you can reduce the entrainment period—the time it takes to adapt to a new time zone—drastically. The app uses a model built by Daniel Forger of the University of Michigan based on 10 years of sleep study observations. To Forger, the model was surprisingly simple in that it gradually adjusts the period of light exposure. The app itself is still experimental and is being used to crowdsource further data regarding how effective the proposed schedules are.
