New Scientist : A new recharging device for smartphones and other mobile gadgets will soon be available in the US. At this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the UK-based company Intelligent Energy unveiled its Upp charger, a compact hydrogen fuel cell that magnetically attaches to a small canister filled with hydrogen. Providing more power than a spare battery, the Upp can recharge a phone about five times before its hydrogen canister needs to be replaced. The device was originally designed to be used in Africa, where the national electrical grid is unreliable.
