New Delhi office building fights air pollution with greenhouse

DEC 31, 2014
Physics Today

National Geographic : The smog has become so bad in New Delhi—three times as bad as in Beijing—that a business executive there has developed an elaborate—and green—system to clean the air in his office building. Kamal Meattle, CEO of Paharpur Business Centre, has installed a greenhouse on the roof and spread 800 other plants throughout the multistory building. The greenhouse is used in combination with a system of scrubbers and filters to rid the filthy incoming air of several pollutants, including nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, formaldehyde, benzene, carbon monoxide, and bacteria. In use over the past several years, the innovative system has proven effective in alleviating the health problems associated with air pollution, according to a study by the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute and the Central Pollution Control Board.
